United Students Against Sweatshops
16th Annual National Conference
University of Miami, Miami, FL
February 22 and 23, 2013
Calling all students!
It’s time for students and workers to raise our voices! This past year we’ve seen an unprecedented wave of resistance, from Walmart workers and Chicago teachers striking for fair pay and respect, to fast food workers in New York City walking off the job, to undocumented students winning in-state tuition. This February, hundreds of students from across the nation are coming together at this pivotal moment in history to build a stronger movement for justice on campus.
United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) is a national organization run entirely by students. We are students at community colleges and 4-year colleges, undergrads and grad students, experienced organizers and brand new activists. We campaign alongside workers on our campuses and abroad, using our leverage as students to win historic victories over billionaire corporations. And we want you to join us!
This year’s USAS National Conference will be February 22-23, 2013. USAS members voted to hold the conference at the University of Miami, home of Sebastian the Ibis and the warmest weather you’ll find in February. Like USAS organizers on more than 150 other campuses, UMiami students are taking action together with campus workers and garment workers to stop allowing their university to drive a race-to-the-bottom for workers.
The 2013 National Conference is a unique chance to gather with hundreds of students committed to taking back our universities and demanding respect for workers and affordable quality education for all. At the conference, students will:
- Learn about and plan national USAS campaigns with workers who sew our schools’ clothes and workers on our campuses.
- Sharpen your organizing skills and get new ideas for your campus group with workshops and trainings lead by veteran student and labor organizers.
- Join teams of students already working to build our student-labor movement, share experiences with organizers from all walks of life, and make our work more dynamic, creative and fun.
- Be part of a powerful, nationally-coordinated student movement that fights for justice, and wins!
Plan your group’s travel now! You need to arrive in Miami the night of Thursday, February 21, and leave Sunday, February 23. Housing and food is free to anyone registered for the conference.
16 years after students formed USAS to counter the power of multinational corporations and corporate-friendly college administrators, we are celebrating our major student-worker victories, past, present, and future. We know that when we organize in solidarity with workers and our communities, from the Adidas workers from the PT Kizone factory in Indonesia, to students and homeowners fighting Wells Fargo foreclosures in Minnesota, to the Chartwells workers at UMiami, we are stronger together.
Will you join us to build a student movement to stop sweatshop universities? Whether you’re totally new to activism, or have some experience under your belt, register now and we’ll send you more information on how you can get involved!
