#USAS2016 Conference Reportback

Hey USAS fam,

The past week has been like a dream. I can’t thank all of you enough for bringing your powerful selves to Pittsburgh for the 19th national conference – an entire weekend of inspiration and learning. I loved hanging out with old friends and meeting new friends. It was good vibes all around, from the emotional worker panel to the informative workshops to the empowering collective liberation section. Goooood vibes. Shout out to all three hundred students from across the country that came together to celebrate, build relationships, and figure out the next steps of the revolution. Special shout out to all the new chapters and new folks that came out!

In case you missed it, last Friday we had over 500 people come together to shut down the streets of Pittsburgh, demanding $15 for all campus and student workers, along with $15 and a union for all low-wage workers in the city. There was solidarity between all ranks of the university – students, faculty, and other Pitt workers – along with members of the United Steelworkers, SEIU healthcare, SEIU 32BJ, UFCW, Pittsburgh Fight for $15, and others. Check out just some of the media covering the event (messaging was so on point!) –

USAS continues to surprise and inspire me every day  We left with a renewed commitment to win our campaigns against Nike, support our campus workers, and we even launched a national movement for $15 on our campuses — the beginning of a student worker revolution. I can’t wait to see what 2016 has in store for the student movement – or should I say, I can’t wait to see what the student movement has in store for 2016?

Continue to stay in touch! Show some love for the University of Pittsburgh USAS Local 31.

When I send out the weekly emails for our USAS local, I always end with a haiku, and so I leave you all with one of my personal favorites…

Theory is useful

Action is key – above all,

Love is what we need

In solidarity,

Kai Pang
